Bonsai trees are no plants which were bred especially for this target. Bonsai signifies merely the art to copy trees in shells; scarfs in the miniature format, as well as they grow up in the free nature in normal size. Hence, any species of trees are suited basically for shaping as bonsai.
As a beginner it is especially important to remember always that not a single bonsai style is the only right one. The ready of a bonsai masterpiece surrenders from the way how you look at this tree. You do not learn from a bonsai master, youy receive merely insights into the creation technologies. What you make from it, at last lies in your mind.

You should try to let your bonsai tree lok as natural as possible. Are directed after the possibilities the tree will suggest to you. If the trunk bends to the right, let the tree grow that wayo. Work with the tree and put outside thus the feature of your bonsai. You must listen to the tree and transform what tells it to you. Then you will present a nice creation!
Bonsais should simulate age. Hence, you should try to show the maturity of your tree just in a miniature form. Even if your tree is still relatively young, a good maintenance causes that he looks in such a way, as if he had grown already for many years.

There are two features which give an older appearance to the trees. It is of the caliper of the trunk and the degree of taper of the trunk. With most kinds of creations the trunks of the bonsai are very wide in the base and taper to very flatly to the peak of the tree.
In general there are two styles of the bonsai: the classic and the informal or comic ones. With the first style the trunk of the tree is broader in the base and tapers to a point upwards. Just the opposite applies in the other style which is to be worked on much more difficultly.

If you start forming a bonsai, you should always remember that you work with a living plant. Look carefully at its natural properties, and you can find the suitable style within the given possibilities. Often you can train in a plant also several style directions. Even if it is similar basically upright to a beech or elegantly slender like a maple. Even if the style really adapts to the specific features of the tree, there are many different ways to the interpretation. In no case you should try to force a style upon your bonsai stands in contrast to its natural growth pattern. Study its pattern and are directed after what gave the nature to it.
