History of bonsai art

In the 17th and 18-th century the Japanese bonsai art reached their peak. It had become a part of the Japanese way of life. Bonsai had served to understand, on the one hand, the nature better and to improve in appearance on the other hand. At that time containers were used, apparently a little bit were deeper than those which are used today. The main factor in the development of the bonsai was the restriction on the most important parts of the plant. All apparently dispensable parts were removed. The removal of all insignificant and the reduction on the essential elements for the final improvement was symbolic for the Japanese philosophy of that time.

During this time bonsai also asserted itself in the general Japanese general public. The great inquiry for the small trees began and this art form firmly set up in the japanese culture and tradition.

The development brought it with itself that bonsai developed in different style directions which considerably differed of each other. Bonsai artists attempted more and more culturally important elements like rock to realise accent works, and even small buildings and people, also known as an art of the Bons-kei, famously, with their bonsai trees. Also reproducing whole miniature sceneries in the free nature, known as a Sai-kei, originated in this time. Besides many other artistic creation possibilities developed for bonsai.

After more than 230 years of the global isolation Japan opened at the middle of 19-th century to the rest of the world. The travellers who came back from Japan and had seen there the miniature trees in the ceramic containers which copied ripe, high trees in the nature at the age spread fast the customer of bonsai. Then at the end of the century exhibits followed in London, Vienna and Paris. Especially the Paris world exhibit in 1900 announced bonsai of the wide world public.

The inquiry for bonsai started to rise rapidly. The lack of natural small-grown trees led to the commercial production of the bonsai. Several basic styles asserted themselves. The bonsai artists made} use of wire, bamboo canes and other technologies to influence the growth and the shaping and to develop. The Japanese quickly learnt that one could also make money with the growing interest on this form of art. Hence, it did not last long and there originated companies which bred excluding bonsai trees and export afterwards.
